Difference xnview mp12/5/2023 Obviously it's a personal choice - who knows, I may even try a different workflow just 'cos it's a new year. My preference is for FS as a 'Swiss Army Knife' tool. As I use a rather old laptop the concept of colour managed display is way beyond my reach. ![]() If I was using a different tool full time for image editing then I think it would be good for first view/culling etc. The basic drop/draw/rotate tools all work well. I like the additional exif display but find some parts of the file/user operations a but clumsy. ![]() tgz (that's zipped standalone portable version if you're a windows user) WRT XnViewMP, as a linux user I appreciate the cross-platform nature and either a package file or fully working. However as a linux user it does have the overhead of needing to run under Wine - which it does almost impeccably apart from a glitch in the thumbnail view which requires the installation of a venerable dll from 2001 - which itself limits one to using Wine 2.1 - nothing newer.įaststone has a number of user customisations for mouse and keyboard which I find very useful as they do speed up long view/culling sessions. The batch resize tool has been handy for customising my icon theme and you can even use FS as a poor man's Powerpoint with the draw tool and slideshow creator. I curate photos for our local U3A photo groups and find the multiple search and replace features in the file renaming tool a real bonus. You do need to adjust the RAW settings to get past working on the embedded jpeg - but TBH I have only used that very occasionally. I am a long time user of FastStone and find that for both RAW and JPEG editing it provides 99.9% of all my needs. How do Faststone and XnViewMP compare from a feature and performance standpoint? I often hear that XnViewMP would be a better match for my needs. Works well for me, except that while it is "color aware", it is not "color managed". "Synchronize Folder" scans & synchronizes recursively down the tree from whichever level it's run, so you don't have to try to remember exactly each & every folder in which something was changed.I've been a long time Faststone user - mostly for quick viewing and image culling - less so for editing. Not to mention it's also *MUCH* slower to completely remove & re-add, rather than just scan or changes. In an extremely simple test case like above, where you just change one folder, this could work, but if you're just working normally in another OS or on other systems for awhile, it'd be impossible to come back & remember exactly which folders you have to remove & re-add one at a time. This requires explicitly remembering each specific folder in which you modified something. remove / add the folder in "settings catalog" will perfectly renew this folder in my catalog. > Another method : First, I make sure I always have the same data in the catalog and metadata. Yup - as far as I can tell, this button doesn't do anything. > no changes (the non existent photos won't be updated !) Did you just quit & reopen xnview (after renaming) and the new photo is there? Did you do some other step that you didn't mention? This seems to be a key difference in what we're observing. I only see the photo once, with the old name (which is of course no longer available). > category filter shows two times the same photo ( new name + previous name ) ![]() Settings->Catalog->Import folder=(my base dir) Settings->Catalog->Base path of your pictures=(my base dir) Another scenario that would have this issue is when managing media on a removable device (external HDD), which is sometimes used from a different computer. The reason I cannot do all my file management in XnView is because it's a dual boot system, so I'm sometimes working from a different OS - & it isn't feasible to reboot to the other OS each time I need to i.e. Note: just to preempt one possible answer, I cannot exclusively use XnView for adding/moving/removing files on disk - I need to be able to do so elsewhere, & then have XnView update its catalog accordingly. How can I accomplish the same as LR's "Synchronize Folder?" A few weeks later, after some reorganizations within D:\Pics, how do I tell XnView to look for changes & update its catalog accordingly? In LR, I do this by right-clicking the folder in the tree, & choosing "Synchronize Folder." In XnView, I thought this might be handled by View->Update catalog from files, but it seems not to do so. One thing I can't figure out: after I've added some folders to its catalog, how can I recursively "update" all files/subfolders that have been added/removed/moved? For instance, initially I add D:\Pics. I'm working on trying to replace LR with XnView MP as my primary catalog/tagger.
